I came to Nuremberg to provide historical context to the current global threat facing our civilization. The last two and a half years have been particularly exhausting - painful memories were awakened again.

In 1941 I was three and a half years old when my family was evicted from their home in Romania and deported to Ukraine.

We were herded into a concentration camp where we practically starved to death. Death was everywhere. My father died of typhus when I was five years old.

In 1944, as the Final Solution was being aggressively implemented, Romania withdrew from the alliance with Nazi Germany. The government allowed several hundred Jewish orphans under the age of 12 to return to Romania. I wasn't an orphan; my mother lied to save my life.

I boarded a cattle train—the same train that continued to transport Jews to the death camps—even after Germany was losing the war.

It was four years before I was reunited with my mother.
